This beautiful, circular "caldera" (crater)
lake of approximately 8 km in circumference is situated in the Shikotsu
Toya National Park, and its water is second only to that of Lake Mashu
in terms of clarity. The lake is known as a landlocked-salmon-fishing
Mecca.
According to the results of the
Environment Ministry's public water-quality measurements carried out
in 2001, the lake's water quality was the best in the country, in the
lakes and marshes category.

the word Kuttarushi-to, meaning a lake in Kojohama.

Landlocked-salmon fishing
Landlocked-salmon fishing in Lake Kuttara is limited to a certain season.
The season usually runs from mid May to early August, when fishing is
only permitted from rented boats (up to 2 persons per boat). Each person
is allowed up to 3 rods. Ground baiting is prohibited, and those fishing
are obliged to report the number of fish caught.
Fishing fee: ¥1,500 per person
Rental boat: ¥2,000 per boat
