With its Ainu Museum, which is the largest in Japan, this facility is famous for introducing Ainu culture. A performance of the mukkuri, an Ainu musical instrument. Traditional dances representative of the Ainu are always being displayed. In particular, the traditional dances have been designated as significant intangible folklore cultural assets of the nation. The facility, also known as "Porotokotan" (Poro means large; to means lake and kotan means village), is a popular destination for many visitors.

The museum is situated in a unique building modeled on a chise (an old Ainu house). The interior houses a museum specializing in everything concerning the Ainu, where many materials and cultural assets introducing the Ainu lifestyle culture through their clothing, food and shelter, their beliefs and way of life, are displayed. In addition, investigations and research into Ainu culture is also carried out at the facility, which acts as a base for exchanges with indigenous people throughout the world, and also exhibits materials from such cultural exchanges.

Mukkuri

Traditional dances such as the iomante rimse (sending of the bear's spirit), the sarorun chikapu rimse (courting crane dance), etc. are designated as significant intangible folklore cultural assets of the nation. At Porotokotan, of these dances, the iomante rimse, along with the pirika song and mukkuri are performed as they were in ancient times. Explanations regarding the kotan are given regularly inside the chise (house), and traditional Ainu dress is provided for visitors to wear while having their photos taken.
